1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
2. Add the lentils and water to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
3. Add the rice, cumin, salt, and black pepper to the pot. Stir well, cover, and cook on low heat for another 20 minutes, or until the rice and lentils are tender.
4. Fluff the mixture with a fork and serve warm.

This dish is great as a main course or a side dish. You can also add a dollop of yogurt on top for extra flavor.
